Taking Care of the Terrain: Why Toxic Overload Affects Your Health
I’ve just completed a course in patient care using an integrated oncology approach.
It was extremely detailed, and I am currently rewatching a large proportion of the course to embed the scientific understanding and how to tailor advice to my clients.
I’m not here to treat cancer, but to understand some of the drivers so that I can support clients post-treatment, or during treatment where appropriate and with oncologist agreement.
Today, we understand that many health conditions are connected to metabolic imbalance, which can upset the way our cellular energy powerhouses work. These are known as mitochondria.
Taking care of the flow and flux of energy metabolism, and ensuring it is all moving towards creating optimum health, was at the heart of the training.
Don’t worry, I’m not going to throw lots of terminology at you.
But I do want to share a common theme between this course and my naturopathic training and principles: The terrain is everything.
What Do We Mean by “The Terrain”?
Naturopathic terrain theory is the concept that the body’s internal environment, or “terrain”, influences susceptibility to illness.
The French scientist Antoine Béchamp argued that disease originates from within the body and that the body’s own condition dictates health. This was linked to how germs, such as viruses, take hold.
He was in direct conflict at the time with Louis Pasteur, who demonstrated that germs “cause” disease. Béchamp’s view was that this would only occur if the host environment was not optimal.
I summarise this history to share my naturopathic belief: when we take care of the human body and aim for optimal health, it is in a stronger position to fight disease.
This brings me back to my training course.
One important factor in supporting the terrain, and those precious mitochondria, is to minimise toxic overload.
Why Toxic Overload Matters
Toxicity is unfortunately all around us.
We can be exposed to it through pesticides, herbicides, fire retardants, environmental chemicals, heavy metals and many other sources.
The body is remarkable at detoxification.
But at what point can it keep up with the demands being thrown at it?
This is why I recommend detoxification or cleansing at least once a year. I often run an online group detox programme in autumn or early spring to provide guidance and support in a community setting.
And through the rest of the year, I regularly consume a cleansing protein juice for breakfast.
I recently updated this recipe, so I thought I’d share it with you today and explain why each ingredient is included.
I hope you enjoy it.
Lemon Green Cleanser
Kick-start the day with this light, refreshing juice.
It is ideal for anyone new to green juices. The combination of tart lemon and greens makes this a lovely way to hydrate and support the body’s natural cleansing processes.
Why These Ingredients?
Parsley is packed with vitamin C, folate and iron. It is also useful as a digestive aid, helping to relieve indigestion and intestinal gas, and it may help reduce fluid retention.
Celery is hydrating and high in antioxidants, helping to fight free radical damage.
Ginger and lemon are natural digestive calmatives and support the liver.
Apple is rich in pectin, a soluble fibre that helps bowel regularity and binds to heavy metals to aid toxin elimination.
Coconut water provides electrolytes and hydration and may also aid digestion.
Protein powder is essential to balance the juice, create satiety and support the liver’s natural detoxification pathways.
How to make
Serves: 1
Quantity: around 300ml
Preparation time: 5 minutes
Ingredients
- 1/2 lemon, peeled
- Small handful of fresh parsley
- 1 small apple, ideally a less sweet variety
- 1″ fresh ginger, peeled
- 1/2 stalk celery
- 1/8 cucumber
- 1 scoop vegan protein powder, such as pea protein, aiming for around 15g
- Coconut water for desired consistency, approximately 200–250ml
Method
Juice all the ingredients together, then stir before serving. Best drunk immediately.
Final Thought
Supporting the body does not always have to be complicated.
Sometimes it starts with understanding the terrain, reducing the burden where we can, and giving the body the nutrients, hydration and support it needs to function well.
This cleansing protein juice is one small, practical way to support your body’s natural detoxification pathways and start the day feeling nourished.
If you feel you would benefit from more personalised support, or you are interested in joining one of my seasonal detox programmes, you are very welcome to get in touch.

What is toxic overload?
Toxic overload refers to the build-up of environmental chemicals, heavy metals and other substances that may place extra demand on the body’s natural detoxification systems.
What is naturopathic terrain theory?
Naturopathic terrain theory is the idea that the body’s internal environment influences how resilient it is and how well it responds to health challenges.
Can nutrition support detoxification?
Yes, nutrition can support the body’s natural detoxification pathways by providing protein, fibre, antioxidants, hydration and nutrients needed by the liver and digestive system.
Why add protein powder to a cleansing juice?
Protein helps balance the juice, support satiety and provide amino acids that are important for the liver’s natural detoxification pathways.
Is this cleansing juice suitable for beginners?
Yes, this recipe is light, refreshing and ideal for anyone new to green juices, especially because the lemon, apple and coconut water make it more palatable.
