Toxic load refers to the build-up of environmental chemicals and toxins the body is exposed to over time. This refers to the cumulative build-up of chemicals and toxins we are exposed to every single day through food, water, plastics, pollution, personal care products, household chemicals and even the air we breathe.

And whilst our bodies are designed to detoxify naturally through the liver, gut, kidneys, skin and lungs, the sheer volume of exposure today can place those systems under increasing pressure. This also connects to research about the terrain is everything, a concept that your body is an environment or “terrain” that can dictate your health.

What Is Toxic Load?

Toxic load is the term used to describe the total burden of environmental toxins and chemicals the body is exposed to over time.

Unlike our grandparents, we now live in a world filled with:

  • Ultra-processed foods
  • Plastics and packaging
  • Pesticides and herbicides
  • Artificial fragrances
  • Cleaning chemicals
  • Heavy metals
  • Pollution
  • Food additives
  • Non-stick coatings

Many of these exposures may seem small individually, but over time, they can accumulate.

What I often see is that people don’t necessarily connect these exposures to how they feel day to day.


Why Are We Exposed to So Many Chemicals?

Modern life has brought convenience, but it has also dramatically increased our exposure to synthetic chemicals.

Compared to previous generations, we are now exposed to far more synthetic substances throughout daily life. Many people don’t realise just how many chemicals the body now has to process every day through food, water, plastics, pollution and household products.

Many products we use daily were never part of human life until relatively recently:

  • Plastic food containers
  • Artificial air fresheners
  • Flame retardants
  • Processed foods
  • Water-resistant coatings
  • Chemical cleaning sprays

And because exposure tends to happen gradually, it’s easy to overlook.

Some people may tolerate these exposures better than others, while others appear more sensitive, particularly when there are already underlying digestive, hormonal or inflammatory issues present.


What Are Forever Chemicals?

You may have heard the term “forever chemicals” in the media.

These are chemicals known as PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances), which are used in products designed to resist heat, oil, water and stains.

They are commonly found in:

  • Non-stick cookware
  • Waterproof clothing
  • Food packaging
  • Stain-resistant fabrics
  • Some cosmetics
  • Fast food wrappers

They are nicknamed “forever chemicals” because they break down extremely slowly in the environment.

Public health researchers and environmental organisations have increasingly raised concerns about PFAS exposure and cumulative chemical burden in modern life.

They can have a high impact in your body as they accumulate in human tissues and are very hard to remove, like the kidneys and liver.

Switching to glass or stainless steel containers can help reduce chemical migration into food.

3. Filter your water if possible

A good quality water filter may help reduce certain contaminants.

4. Open windows regularly

Fresh air and ventilation matter more than many people realise.

5. Choose fragrance-free products where possible

Artificial fragrances can contribute significantly to indoor chemical exposure.

Reducing exposure to plastics, ultra-processed foods and certain “forever chemicals” where possible can all help lower the body’s cumulative burden over time.
