What Naturopathy Means to Me: My Feature with the Public Health Alliance

I was delighted to be asked by the Public Health Alliance to contribute to their recent article on naturopathy, because it gave me the opportunity to explain something I care deeply about: looking at the whole person, not just one symptom.

As a member of the PHA, it was lovely to be invited to share my thoughts on what naturopathy means in practice, why digestion is such an important part of the wider health picture, and why food, stress, sleep and everyday habits all matter when we are trying to understand someone’s health.

Why Naturopathy Looks at the Whole Person

One of the things I was asked to explain was what it really means to look at the whole person rather than focusing only on one symptom.

This is a fundamental part of my work as both a Nutritional Therapist and Naturopath.

When someone first comes to see me, I take a very detailed case history. This includes past health concerns, antibiotic use, parental health and disease, sleep, stress and, of course, typical dietary intake.

When I meet clients, whether in person or online, I am also listening out for the little clues that can help me join up the dots.

The body and mind are an integrated whole, and a symptom in one part of the body may have been triggered by something happening elsewhere.

In the PHA article, I gave the example of constipation. If toxicity is reabsorbed back into the bloodstream, it may be expressed elsewhere, such as through skin concerns, heavier periods, headaches or a foggy head.

This is why naturopathy does not simply ask, “How do we suppress this symptom?”

It asks, “What else is going on?”

Why Gut Health Matters So Much

Gut health is a particular area of interest for me, and I was asked why digestion can be such an important part of the wider health picture.

My answer was simple:

You are what you eat, digest and absorb.

A massively overlooked aspect of health is sub-optimal digestion. I see the increasing diagnosis of B12 deficiency and low iron directly linked to this.

People often do not respect this important function. They may eat too fast, eat on the go or eat when overly stressed. Yet if food is not being optimally digested, even when it is the best quality food, the body may struggle to extract the nutrients it needs.

I also see poorly digested food being free to “feed” pathogenic or pathobiont bacteria, which can contribute to bloating, gas and so much more.

This is why digestion is always such an important part of the conversation.

What People Often Misunderstand About Naturopathy

Another point I shared in the article is that many people do not fully understand naturopathy.

It is well respected in places like America and Australia, but it is not as widely understood here in the UK, where fully accredited training providers are extremely few.

One of the key principles of naturopathy is that the body has an inherent ability to heal itself, given the right tools and guidance.

This does not mean looking for a quick fix or a magic pill. Too many people want an instant answer, but sometimes it takes time to bring the body back into balance.

That said, when we support the body properly, with the right foundations and the right guidance, it can be remarkable what may begin to change.

The Simple Foundations I Come Back To

When people think about improving their health, they can sometimes feel they need to change everything at once.

But that is rarely where I begin.

The foundations I often encourage people to think about first are simple: eat real food, include protein, good fats and plenty of vegetables, take time to eat meals, go to bed earlier and start moving.

They may sound simple, but they are effective.

Consistency is key, and when people understand why each one supports the body’s recovery, they are far more likely to keep going.

This is not about perfection. It is about creating the conditions that allow the body to work better.

Listen to What Your Body Is Telling You

After many years working with clients, one thing I wish more people understood is that the body is always trying to tell us something.

It might be a niggle, a recurring pain, a change in digestion, a drop in energy, poor sleep or a symptom that keeps returning.

These are signals worth paying attention to.

Don’t ignore them. Listen to your body and take steps to do everything you can naturally to allow the body to repair.

Your body is amazing.

Final Thought

For me, naturopathy is about looking at the whole person and helping people understand what their body may be trying to tell them.

It is not about complicated routines, perfection or changing everything overnight. It is about simple, consistent steps that support the body’s natural ability to come back into balance.

If you feel your body has been giving you signs that something is not quite right, whether through digestion, energy, sleep, stress or ongoing symptoms, you are very welcome to book a free 20-minute discovery call.
