Should we genetically engineer tomatoes for Vitamin D?

We know that we get most of our vitamin D3 from the sunshine absorbed directly onto our (suntan free) skin. But with a lack of sunshine throughout many months of the year in the UK, together with the sun being low in the sky, we cannot convert sufficient UVB to Vitamin D3.

It was therefore interesting to read that scientists at the John Innes Centre in Norwich have found a way to genetically modify tomatoes to be a “rich” source of the vitamin.

But is this a sensible idea? Should we genetically modify plants in this way? Is it even worthwhile?

I think not! And I think it is poor use of valuable research money, when funding for research in the natural healthcare market is extremely precious.
