IBS – what is it and what can we do?

According to NHS Choices website, IBS is a common condition causing symptoms like stomach cramps, bloating, diarrhoea and constipation that tend to come and go over time, and can last for days, weeks or months at a time and is usually a lifelong problem. It goes on to say there is no cure.

Sounds daunting doesn’t it? With up to 25% of the UK population potentially experiencing IBS, it is a modern day phenomenon. But whether we call it IBS or focus on specific symptoms, help is at hand.

A qualified Naturopathic Nutritional Therapist is trained to look in-depth at your symptoms, asking really specific questions to help understand when and where in the digestive tract the problem(s) may originate: prior to eating, in the mouth, in the stomach, in the small intestines, in the large intestines. Rather than focus on symptoms, we need to look at root causes. At each phase, digestive secretions and or/beneficial bacteria (known as our microbiome) come into play.

Too often we forget simple steps to help our digestion such as “Mindful Eating”: some deep breathing, chewing food well and trying to eat when we are as relaxed as we can be helps to move us into “rest and digest” (enabling digestion) and away from a sympathetic stress mode. But in reality it is likely to be multi-faceted and very often may require some additional digestive support that a qualified practitioner can advise on. There is no one size fits all and by taking a full case history at a one to one consultation a personalised approach will be recommended.

“Caroline has literally transformed my life! I don’t say that lightly but she is the first person to really listen to me and my symptoms for twenty years. With her careful consultation skills and truly getting to know me, she was able to offer me personal advice that within one month had removed nearly all the symptoms I had experienced for 20 years. I had severe abdominal bloating and stabbing pains, I am now living my life to the full, and I can honestly say it is all down to Caroline’s expertise. Thank you so much!”
