Endocrine Disruptors and Menopause Podcast
We are surrounded by chemicals in everyday life, from plastics and food packaging to cosmetics, cleaning products and cookware.
Some of these are known as endocrine-disrupting chemicals, or EDCs, because they can interfere with the body’s natural hormone signalling.
For women going through perimenopause and menopause, I believe this is something worth becoming more aware of.
In this episode of the Principles of Good Health podcast, I explain what endocrine disruptors are, where you may be exposed to them and some simple changes you can make without feeling that you have to overhaul your whole life.
Listen to the episode below:
In this episode, I cover:
- what endocrine-disrupting chemicals are
- why they may be particularly relevant during menopause
- how some chemicals can interfere with oestrogen signalling
- common EDCs including BPA, phthalates, PFAS, pesticides and PCBs
- where these chemicals may be found in everyday life
- plastics, food packaging and non-stick cookware
- cosmetics, toiletries and household products
- ways to reduce your exposure gradually
- why small, manageable changes are more realistic than trying to avoid everything
The important thing is not to become frightened by chemical exposure.
You cannot remove every endocrine disruptor from your environment, nor do you need to.
Instead, look at the products and materials you come into contact with most often and start with one or two realistic changes.
